Queensland Man Charged Over Alleged Disruption on Gold Coast-bound Flight

A Queensland man is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court Tuesday, charged about a disturbance on a Gold Coast-bound flight earlier this year.

On the evening of 26 September 2024, the AFP at Gold Coast Airport was contacted by an airline requesting police attend the arrival of a flight from Melbourne about a man who allegedly made aggressive and sexually graphic comments towards a female crew member.

Police met the flight on its arrival, spoke with the man and arrested him.

The Surfers Paradise man, 41, was charged with one count of acting in an offensive manner on board an aircraft, contrary to s15(1) of the Crimes (Aviation) Act 1991 (Cth).

AFP Acting Superintendent Matthew Biddle said police would not tolerate poor and illegal behaviour onboard aircraft.

“People should be able to travel on flights, and crew should be able to go about their workday without the threat of intimidation or offensive behaviour from other passengers,” Biddle said.

Biddle said, “Travelling on an aircraft should be a safe experience for everyone, and police will continue to work with airline staff to ensure that they are.

“Police will also continue putting people before the court should they misbehave while travelling, particularly in the lead-up to the busy festive season.”
