Montenegro Declares Three-day Mourning, Emergency Government Session After Mass Shooting Tragedy in Cetinje

On the occasion of the tragic event that occurred Wednesday in Cetinje, the government of Montenegro has declared January 2, 3 and 4 as days of mourning.

The government of Montenegro appealed to municipalities to cancel performances and concerts scheduled for New Year’s Day.

“A terrible tragedy that has affected us all. All available units are in Cetinje and are searching for the perpetrator. I hope that the doctors will save the lives of the wounded, who are in serious condition,” said Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.

“We will also hold a session of the National Security Council at which we will consider numerous options, including a complete ban on the possession of weapons because after this, we have to ask ourselves who should be allowed to possess weapons in Montenegro,” added Spajić.

The day of mourning is marked by the mandatory display of flags at half-mast on all buildings of state authorities and buildings of local self-government bodies and public institutions, in accordance with the Law on State Symbols and the Statehood Day of Montenegro.

Following the decision, public, cultural and entertainment programmes will not be held in public places, and music will not be broadcast in catering facilities.

The government urged electronic and other media to adapt their programming to the observance of the day of mourning.
