The Australian Federal Police has established Special Operation Avalite to investigate and prosecute crimes targeting the Australian Jewish community and federal parliamentarians.
Investigation teams have been set up in Canberra, Sydney, and Melbourne, and engagement with Jewish community groups across Australia has commenced.
The operation will utilise Commonwealth legislation to disrupt and prosecute high-harm, high-impact offending. However, it will not replace state and territory jurisdictional primacy, instead complementing existing law enforcement efforts.
Since its establishment on December 9, 2024, the AFP has received 124 reports of crime for potential offences under Commonwealth legislation.
As of January 9, 2025, 102 reports are under investigation, and 22 reports have not been accepted for investigation, possibly due to insufficient evidence, duplicate reports, or investigation by another agency.
The AFP will continue to review historic reports dating back to October 7, 2023, and provide further updates in due course.
