A joint operation by the Dominican Republic’s National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD), Navy, Air Force, and State intelligence agencies has resulted in the seizure of 620 packages of suspected cocaine.
This is the second major cache seized in the first week of January.
The operation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, began with surveillance and air, sea, and land pursuit of a speedboat spotted moving suspiciously near the coast of La Altagracia province.
After abandoning their vessel at Playa Palmilla, Bayahibe Municipal District, the crew members fled into a wooded area of Cotubanamá Park.
Authorities found 22 bales containing the suspected cocaine, along with other evidence.
Search operations are ongoing to apprehend the members of the criminal network involved. The Public Prosecutor’s Office and DNCD are investigating to identify those responsible.
This seizure brings the total amount of cocaine confiscated in the Dominican Republic to 1.3 tons in the first week of January.
The suspected cocaine has been sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences for further analysis.
