‘Pope Slept, Is Resting’ Amid Death Fear, Says Catholic’s Holy See

“The night went well; the Pope slept and is resting,” said the Vatican on Monday.

On Sunday, the Holy See said Pope Francis’ condition “remains critical.” It, however, added that since yesterday evening, he has not had any further respiratory crises.

“He has received two units of packed red blood cells with positive results and with a rise in the haemoglobin value. The thrombocytopenia has remained stable; however, some blood tests show initial, mild, renal insufficiency, which is currently under control.

“High-flow oxygen therapy continues via nasal cannulae. The Holy Father continues to be alert and focused. The complexity of the clinical picture and the necessary time required for pharmacological therapies to yield some results require that the prognosis remain reserved,” said the Vatican.

During the morning, at the apartment on the 10th floor, he attended Holy Mass with those caring for him during “these days of his hospital stay,” said the Vatican.

On Saturday, the Vatican mentioned that the pope’s condition continued to be critical, “so, as explained yesterday (Friday)”, the pope “is not out of danger.”

Saturday morning, the Vatican reported that the Catholic pope suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis, which also required the application of high-flow oxygen.

“Today’s blood tests also revealed platelopenia, associated with anaemia, which required the administration of blood transfusions.

“The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair, although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” the Holy See said.
